In its inaugural season of competition, the West Chicago Wildcats girls’ flag football team built steady momentum, earning multiple wins and establishing a strong foundation for the future. Although new to WEGO, the program finished its first season on a high note, finding early success and strong camaraderie on the field.
As a new program, the team faced the challenges of learning a developing sport while competing against established schools. Despite the pressure, players kept their energy high and improved with each game. They practiced every day except Mondays and Wednesdays, typically game days, focusing on footwork and memorizing routes.
“I’ve actually faced a lot of challenges with memorizing plays and positions. I usually am always screamed at, but it’s okay. I’m learning now,” freshman Allison Rocha said.

Teamwork and memorization were critical, since constant communication was required on the field. Mistakes could cost yards, but players saw them as learning opportunities for the next game. Varsity players said they saw improvement reflected in their midseason wins.
“The game between WEGO and Glenbard East was intense. We played really well. Our offense and defense were good. Our defense was pulling a lot of flags. We just did really good in general,” Senior Salome Vargas said.
Flag football proved to be a challenging sport, but the Wildcats showed that effort pays off. Many players said they enjoyed the experience so much that they hope it inspires other students to try out next year.
“I would recommend flag football because it helps you work on your teamwork skills, you get to have new friends, and it’s just a very fun environment,” senior Vanessa Munoz said.
As the season concluded, the Wildcats reflected on their first year with pride and gratitude in a series of quotes the Chronicle compiled in the below flipbook.
