MAY 10-16: Anahi Munoz earned Athlete of the Week honors after qualifying for the IHSA State Finals in the 3200m and breaking the West Chicago school record with a time of 11:04.61 at sectionals. Munoz also captured the Upstate Eight Conference title in the event and will compete at the state meet next weekend.

APRIL 26-MAY 2: Rising to the challenge in tough conditions, Joey Kurby earned Athlete of the Week honors following an outstanding performance at Thursday’s Wildcat Invitational. Competing in cold and rainy weather, Kurby took first place in both the 100m and 200m dashes and contributed a strong leg to the 4x200m relay team, which also finished in first. His efforts played a key role in securing a first-place overall finish for the boys team. Kurby’s speed, consistency, and ability to perform under pressure made him a standout competitor and a major contributor to the team’s success.

APR. 19–25: Leading from the No. 1 singles spot, senior Alina Ortiz earned Athlete of the Week honors for badminton with her consistent play and composure on the court. A four-year member of the program, Ortiz has shown significant growth throughout her career and continues to compete at a high level against top opponents. Known for staying calm under pressure, she approaches each match with focus and determination while maintaining strong sportsmanship. Ortiz’s leadership and steady presence have been key for the varsity team this season, both in competition and as a role model for younger players. APR. 11-18: Junior Brielle Borner was named Athlete of the Week for softball following a dominant stretch at the plate and strong defensive play. Against Riverside Brookfield on April 7, Borner went 4-for-4 with three singles, a home run and a walk, reaching base in all five appearances. She also made two key plays at first base, including a line drive that led to a double play. Borner followed with another standout performance on April 9 against Ridgewood, going 3-for-4 and scoring three runs, contributing to seven total runs across the two games.

APRIL 5-11: Junior captain Kaylee Kreitzer was named Athlete of the Week for girls soccer after emerging as a key leader for the Wildcats this season. Kreitzer’s energy, character and determination have helped set the tone on and off the field as the team pushes toward its goals. “Kaylee is doing an incredible job at helping lead the team this year,” coach Dorian Carrasco said. “As a junior captain she has shown character and personality. A drive that will help the Wildcats push beyond their goals.”

FEB. 1–7: Will Smoley delivered a record-setting performance at the Upstate Eight Championship, earning Athlete of the Week honors for WEGO boys swimming. Smoley set a new JV meet record in the 50-yard freestyle with a 22.50 — a time that would have won the varsity event — and anchored the medley relay in 21.95. He also dropped more than two seconds in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 49.85. JAN. 11–17: Freshman Jon Hardy was named Athlete of the Week for boys’ basketball after making an impact as a point guard on the sophomore team. Hardy’s high basketball IQ and court vision have helped him limit turnovers while consistently creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. Despite his size and age, he has also emerged as one of the team’s leading rebounders. His effort and commitment to improvement have stood out throughout the season, both on and off the court. Hardy was nominated by Coach Dave Sayner.

NOV. 30-DEC. 6: Freshman Ella Day made a major impact for the girls basketball team this week, helping guide the Wildcats to two conference wins. Coach Mark Fitzgerald highlighted Day’s consistency on both ends of the court. “Ella is an exciting freshman player who helped to guide the Girls Basketball team to two Conference wins this week,” Fitzgerald said. “She averaged 8 points and 10 rebounds a game vs. two very tough and tall teams.”

NOV. 16–22: Junior guard Cole Garling has emerged as a steady leader for the Wildcats, setting the tone with his work ethic, consistency, and team-first mindset. OCT. 19-25: Senior Anahi Munoz ran a personal best of 18:44 in the 5K at regionals, dropping more than three minutes from last season’s time of 22:18. Although she didn’t qualify for sectionals, Munoz said she’s proud of her progress and looks forward to finishing the season at the Mile Trail and NXR Midwest Regional Championships. This is her second Athlete of the Week honor this season.
