As America’s population continues to age, one growing concern is the safety and financial protection of residents in long-term care facilities. Nursing home fraud and abuse—particularly through the manipulation of Medicaid and Medicare—is a widespread and deeply harmful issue. Elderly residents, many of whom suffer from cognitive impairments such as dementia or Alzheimer’s, are especially vulnerable to financial exploitation. This can result in unnecessary medical procedures, trauma, and even death.

In an eye-opening infographic titled “Nursing Homes Fraud & Abuse,” junior Isha Nasib highlights the scope of this problem and outlines potential legal and preventative solutions. Drawing from credible sources and integrating alarming statistics, the project exposes how artificial intelligence, billing scams, and a lack of oversight contribute to fraudulent practices in elder care.
The infographic was part of an English 3 Problem/Solution Research Project, where students were tasked with identifying a real-world issue, conducting thorough research, and presenting their findings visually to a target audience of peers, teachers, and community members. The project emphasized authentic writing—writing that is meaningful, informative, and intended to inspire change.
Nasib’s work was voted one of the top infographics during an in-class showcase held March 26. English teachers and staff were invited to view and vote on the student work during the 7/8 and 10th periods. Teachers praised the depth of research, clarity of design, and strong calls to action embedded in the student-created projects.
