WEGO track and field surged to victory at East Aurora, dominating both the boys’ and girls’ competitions with standout performances in sprints, distance, and field events. From personal records to first-time wins, the team’s momentum is only building.

The boys managed a streak of first-place finishes in both sprint and distance events, including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 4×100, and 4×400.
Senior Robert Lee took first in the 100m with a time of 11.3, while Noah Case won the 400m in 54.4. Andre Dzwiniel and Judah McLean tied for first in the 800m at 2:11.0. The 200m title went to Joseph Kurby with a time of 24.2.
The 4×100 relay team of Lee, Nicholas Roskilly, Kurby, and Case won with a time of 44.5, while the 4×400 squad of Daniel Szacilowski, Daniel Duran, Dzwiniel, and McLean took first in 3:45.0.
Meanwhile, the girls opened with a win in the 4×800 relay and also secured victories in the 200m, 800m, 1600m, and 4×400 relay.
Though it was a windy afternoon, seniors Jessica Balmer, Sophia Garcia, and Dayra Araujo, along with sophomore Anahi Munoz, succeeded in the 4×800. They prepared with several drills followed by a running warm-up directed by coach Jocelyn Grauer. As they headed to the finish line, they were locked in, and remained positive, lapping the competition with a time of 10:47.4.
“My whole body started getting really heavy, and the race was a little hard actually because I was by myself the whole entire time. But you know, I finished kind of strong,” Garcia said.
In addition to the relay, Munoz placed second in the 1600m with 5:56.8, and fourth in the 800m with 2:46.9. Araujo not only ran in the 4×800, but helped close out the night anchoring the 4×400 (4:44.1). The A-team of Balmer, Marszalek, Munoz, and Garcia placed third in 4:55.1.

Garcia also placed fifth in the 800 and fourth in the 400m with 2:47.5 and 1:10.9, respectively.
Fernessa Reyes won the 100m in 14.1 and the long jump at 4.03m, while Emily Nguyen placed second in the 100m with 14.1, tying Reyes. The 400m was swept by Casey Turek and Ella Moffatt, who finished first and second.
As track events were happening, field events were also underway, including the boys’ high jump, where junior Nicholas Roskilly not only won his event but also set a personal record with a height of 1.91 meters.

Roskilly was not the only competitor who had a solid showing at the meet. In the field events, Robert Lee won the long jump with a mark of 6.11 meters, while Dominik Mohai cleared 2.75 meters (9 feet) in pole vault.
“There’s a lot of new competitors, so they don’t have a lot of experience. But even with that little experience, they did really well. Everyone got a new personal record, and senior Dominik Mohai, he got his new PR. He’s a returning pole vaulter, cleared nine feet,” coach Ben Jurgonski said.
That sense of progress extended to newcomers like junior Nery Bañuelos, who competed in his first meet.
“I was feeling excited because it was my first time, but also a little nervous because it was my first time. But I try not to think too much about it,” Bañuelos said.
During recent meets, the WEGO track team has been practicing endlessly to triumph as much—and more—than they can, placing 7th out of 14 at the indoor conference.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how the athletes grow, seeing how well they can improve upon where they were at the beginning of the season,” Jurgonski said.
