Healthy West Chicago hosted their sixth annual 5K run on the morning of September 23 to a large turnout of both runners and local businesses.
Healthy West Chicago is a local organization that strives to teach citizens how to become healthier and more active in their lives. from organizing yoga sessions in Reed-Keppler Park to teaching residents how to cook simple yet healthy meals. Every year, they fundraise for their organization by hosting a 5K run, and a short 1 mile “Fun Run” for youth. Entry to the event was $20 and $5 for the Fun Run.
The 5K began at around 7:30 A.M. to the sound of Mayor Ruben Pineda’s air horn. Runners followed a route from Zone 250 to Yale Street and back up on the westward Geneva Spur trail. The first runners arrived back at the start after about 19 minutes.
West Chicago Community High School staff were also present at the event. Study Hall teacher and Climb Club coach Britta Renwick as well as HR Director Julie Swartzloff both participated in the 5K.
“I am here because I love to walk, but I was pretty much talked into it because normally I don’t get up so early on Saturday mornings, but it is for a good cause,” Renwick said.
Local businesses and organizations such as the Eagle Academy of Martial Arts and Athletico Physical Therapy advertised their services. Additionally, businesses such as Hawthorne’s Backyard, Kindred Coffee Roasters, and Republic Bank all sponsored this year’s event.
Carly Smitherman, the program administrator for Healthy West Chicago, directed the event and helped pass out medals and prizes to participants.
“Working for a community organization is very rewarding because you get to meet people in the community, and an organization is helping [the community] live a healthier life. Being able to interact with individuals on a daily basis and make their lives healthier and happier is something that is great,” Smitherman said.
