My favorite songs in 2020 (so far)

By Leslie Najera-Rivas, Editor in Chief

2020 has been a chaotic year, yet the music never stops. As someone that wakes up and plays music to start the day, there is rarely a single moment where I don’t listen to music. 2020 can’t be over without sharing some of my favorite songs.

  1. “Affluenza” by Conan Gray (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6zoRUdZKU4)

American singer-songwriter Conan Gray speaks about a young person who has symptoms of lack of motivation, feelings of guilt, and isolation– a literal term for wealthy young people. The chill vibes from the pop song released on Gray’s 2020 album “Kid Krow” have increased in popularity after Gray’s song “Heather” became a top hit on popular social media app TikTok. This song has become one of my favorites to listen to while doing homework, as well as the entire album.

  1. “The Stealer” by The Boyz (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFfG_J-Thv0

After winning first place on the Korean show “Road To Kingdom” where various groups competed in performances to win first place and the increase in popularity, South Korean boy group The Boyz released their expected fifth mini-album “Chase” with a total of six songs. Claiming to be stealing people’s hearts, The Boyz has definitely grown from their last full album release “Reveal” and I have been anticipating this album as well.

  1. “My Strange Addiction” by Billie Eilish (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1ATPhkVWi0

Using audios from the popular TV show “The Office,” American singer Billie Eilish ended up in the top 50 albums of 2019 Billboard chart after releasing her album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” with one of my favorite songs “My Strange Addiction.” Although having strange beats, yet that sound so good at the same time, Eilish went towards a different look after the calm vibes from her EP “don’t smile at me.” As much as I waited for the release of the album, so many songs from the album have stuck with me for months and will continue to be my favorite songs.

  1. “Games on your phone” by 24kGoldn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CXrF7LPCjU

From the love-felt lyrics to the hip hop music, American rapper 24kGoldn gives a catchy song to enjoy on a cold summer night (even if we’re in fall and wishing it was summer). As the first song that I have listened to from 24kGoldn, this song did not disappoint at any level. Being a fan of hip hop music definitely made this song one of my favorites to wake up to while getting ready for work or even to just go to the store.

  1. “Bigger” by Beyonce (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14di5tJxn7c

After the popularity of Disney+ movie “Black Is King” starring Beyonce, Beyonce released “Bigger” from her album “The Lion King: The Gift.” From having listened to Beyonce growing up, coming back to her new music was something different yet this song was beautiful from the beginning to the end. To the inspirational lyrics and bringing diversity to the film, Beyonce did a great job. This song is one of those that made me feel accepted with myself from the unique lyrics that make every person feel appreciated for their worth no matter what.
