The southern border is not an ‘national emergency’

President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency to address the border security and humanitarians crisis for his border wall funding.

The declaration took place Friday after Congress denied Trump a bill that would have funded the border wall.

During Trump’s televised announcement, he claimed a border wall was necessary to stop the flow of drugs entering the United States.

According to NBC News, drugs primarily come through the legal ports of entry and through the mail. If the wall’s primary goal is to stop the overflow of drugs coming into the U.S., then it’s just a waste of money.

When the Democrats point out that drugs come through legal ports of entry, Trump says “it’s all a lie.”

However, according to Mercury News, the Department of Homeland Security seized 4,813 pounds of heroin in the first 11 months of 2018 and seven times more cocaine were seized at the legal ports of entry.

It’s hypocritical of Trump calling Democrats liars when every time Trump opens his mouth, it’s full of lies.

In his press conference, Trump said that ‘walls work 100 percent.’

This is not true. There is no such thing as the perfect wall when people have been able to cut through, dig underneath, or climb over the wall in the past years.

Trump continued on by giving an example of an ‘effective wall’ that resides in Israel.

According to USA Today, Trump does not realize that Israel does not rely upon the wall in the West Bank and it is only used for combat against terrorist threats.

The last time a national emergency was called was after 9/11 when terrorists attacked the U.S.

That was an actual national emergency.

The U.S. currently is not under attack in any shape or form and emergency powers shouldn’t be abused by the president over something as unnecessary as the wall.

According to The New York Times, a total of 16 states including California, New York, and Illinois sued Trump Monday over his plan to use emergency powers to spend billions of dollars on his border wall.

The southern border isn’t a national emergency. All 16 states can see that except for the president.

Even if a wall is built on the southern border, it will be taken down by future generations. President Trump needs to take a look at the Berlin wall.
