Born into a military family, with a father and grandfather who served in the U.S Army, senior Gabriel Chase will serve in the United States Marine Corps after graduation.

“I joined because of duty, honor, and commitment to my country. I joined to honor my family’s history and name,” Chase said.

Struggling financially, the military has been an option for Chase all his life.

“I have no money going into college, so the military seemed like the best course of action to get into,” Chase said.

Chase attends basic training workouts on Wednesdays, where he feels a sense of family.

“I realize that working with these guys was the perfect place. Everyone there was like a family and we’re all brothers and sisters,” Chase said. “We’re picking each other off the ground when we fall or pushing each other past our limits and helping each other when we need it.”

Chase is working towards many goals by joining the military, not only does patriotism play a role but also personal growth.

“I want to be in something bigger than myself, I hope to earn discipline and strength,” Chase said.

Chase will head to San Diego’s military base for boot camp Sept. 23. After, he will serve as active duty for four years.

“A lot of my friends, teachers, and parents are excited to see such a big change happen in my life. I’m excited for it. They want me to succeed, and the military is the best place to do it,” Chase said.
