The community will become detectives in WeGo Drama’s performance “Cafe Murder” while benefiting the AIDS organization Broadway Cares Saturday.

“This is something new we’re trying. (It) is a very interactive murder mystery dinner. The audience is trying to solve who the killer is while they’re having dinner and while they’re raising money for charity,” Wego Drama director Mark Begovich said.

Regarding the Broadway Cares charity organization, Begovich said, “It’s an organization that helps people all over the world who are fighting diseases, it funds clinics, (it helps) feed people who are homebound, in addition, now helping with hurricane relief, simply. It’s an organization that’s designed to help lives.”

Actors enjoy performing for a cause.

“My favorite part about this is that it’s going to Broadway Care, this money is going to save someone’s life,” senior Ricky Gieser, who plays the role of a maître d’ said.

With the theme of “transform” this school year, “Cafe Murder” dares WeGo Drama to try something new.

“We wanted to do something different, something we have never done and most schools haven’t done. We are going to transform our cafeteria into this cafe where a murder happens,” Begovich said. “The other aspect is part of the idea of transforming, meaning to be bold, to be daring, so we’re going to dare to do something that most people wouldn’t do.”

According to Begovich, the actors don’t fully know what questions the audience will ask regarding the murder, but they feel prepared.

“As soon as we are on stage, all the nerves go away for a second and you’re just in the moment because you have worked so hard on this, that is just common ground,” junior Neve Ryan, who plays the role of a singing waitress, said.

Tickets were sold in advance and are not available at the door.

The show and dinner will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria.
