In honor of Veterans Day, students and staff came together to appreciate them.

Students in President’s Council planted mini flags on the lawn to recognize veterans.

“We had volunteers to help line entrance A to C with flags. It’s our third year of having the mini flags up,” President’s Council adviser Marc Wolfe said. “We usually leave the flags a few days after. It is kind of a small but symbolic gesture to recognize the veterans.”

Athletic director Doug Mullaney led the Pledge of Allegiance on Friday. Mullaney’s son Douglas Mullaney has served in the Marines for two years including time in the Middle East.

“He is not sure if he is going to re-enlist or not but I think what is important to know is that families who have people in the military know the sacrifices that really take place. It is hard for others to see what goes on,” Mullaney said.

Mullaney said it is important to honor the veterans who have served the country.

“It’s a special day for us and we certainly recognize all of our veterans and we are proud for all of the hard work that they do,” Mullaney said.

Additionally, members of chamber choir sang patriotic songs and the band performed “Taps” at West Chicago’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6791.

“I think it is a really nice way to show that we appreciate the veterans, which I don’t think we do enough of. Playing “Taps” is a big honor to be able to go and to say we have not forgotten about them which I think is really nice,” senior Josh Bowen said.
