Jolly Ranchers Sour Gummies bring disappointment

Despite bold red packaging and iconic branding, Jolly Rancher’s Sour Awesome Reds struggle to distinguish themselves in the crowded gummy market.

The candy falling out of the bag appears tasty, but in all actuality, only one flavor hits the spot.

If one were to enter a store looking for sour candy, many options stand out but do not offer a balance of sweet and sour or the citrusy, acidic sensation that strikes one’s mouth. Jolly Ranchers have many fruity flavors overflowing the bag, which keep them relevant due to their iconic taste. The Jolly Rancher Sour Gummies, however, fall short of that reputation.

The Hershey Company makes the Jolly Rancher Sour Gummies (Awesome Reds). The Awesome Reds edition consists of cherry, strawberry, pomegranate, watermelon, and fruit punch flavors. However, there are other variations available, such as the original sour gummies, which offer a variety of flavors, or a very berry option. There was no official release date for these gummies, as they have all previously existed; however, this edition simply repackages them into a full bag of red flavors.

The packaging features the company name in big navy blue letters with a bright yellow outline to catch the consumer’s eye, along with images of the candy and the fruits that inspire the flavors. The bright red coloring immediately draws attention, making it stand out on the shelf. The package uses cleaner, modern graphic elements.

The pricing of the Jolly Rancher Sour Gummies at $3.19 earns a spot near the bottom of the gummy candy market. Most gummies sold at West Chicago Community High School average from $2–3 depending on size, so these Jolly Rancher gummies are reasonably aligned with the average price for their size.

This product does not distinguish itself in the market of gummies; its standard fruity taste makes it a product consumers will not choose over many other available options. Among the flavors, only the pomegranate stands out, leaving this product an easy skip.

Outside of school, he can usually be found fishing or playing his guitar. New to the Chronicle, Alan hopes to bring his creativity and continue learning.

Senior Brian Cielo is starting his first and final year on the Wildcat Chronicle and his second year at WEGO. He is ready to report and keep the community up to date in the mornings, and in the afternoons he can be found at Lionzvision, using the haircutting skills he has developed over almost three years. At night, he enjoys late drives, imagining himself as Batman.

Connor Holloway, Reporter

Connor Holloway attends West Chicago Community High School: he is 18 years old and looking forward to graduating this spring. He enjoys playing golf, watching football, playing baseball, and occasionally playing basketball. In the future, he hopes to major in business and become an entrepreneur, though he has not yet decided which college he will attend.
