Foods 3 is auctioning off six cakes to faculty in an effort to raise money for future foods classes.

The bids start at $5. A piece of paper is set out in the teacher’s lounge beside each cake where a faculty member can write their name and place a bid.

Typically, the money would go toward Family Consumer Science Night, but since the school is not holding the night, the money raised will be put into future foods classes budgets in order to pay for ingredients used in the class, family and consumer science teacher Patricia Clifford said.

Family Consumer Science Night used to showcase the consumer education, child development, and foods classes.

Students started coming up with cake ideas last week. The groups were to make cakes that were spring themed and they began baking March 11, finishing Thursday, Clifford said.

Themed included “The Big Bunny,” “The Little Bunny,” “The Easter Basket,” “Spring Cleaning,” and “Can’t ‘Weight’ for Spring.”

“When we added foods 3 to the curriculum we auctioned off cupcakes because foods 2 was already making the cakes. We thought the cakes were more complicated so we flip-flopped,” Clifford said.

This year is the first time students worked with fondant. Fondant is a thick paste, very similar to icing, that is molded on top of a cake.

“For some of them it was a little difficult but for others they worked pretty well with it,” Clifford said.

The auction will end at noon Friday.
