In the middle of October, right when the cold breeze begins to stick to faces and temperatures drop, all one can think of is a nice cup of hot chocolate. Trader Joe’s Organic Hot Cocoa welcomes cocoa drinkers to enjoy what they crave. As the summer ends and fall begins, what better way to start fall than with Traders Joe’s organic hot cocoa?
Although specific sourcing details could not be obtained, the cocoa used in Trader Joe’s Organic Hot Cocoa mix is likely sourced from tropical regions where high humidity and warm temperatures support cacao tree growth. After harvesting, cocoa pods undergo a fermentation process to enhance their flavor, which contributes to the rich, bittersweet taste of the cocoa mix. The processed cocoa is then probably packaged and distributed to Trader Joe’s stores for customers to enjoy.
The product results in mixed opinions due to how one may prefer their hot cocoa, whether that be having a super sweet tooth or enjoying things with a more savory flare. The smooth texture and bitter taste may appeal to some, while others may find it less sweet than expected. Still, it is a solid option for those who appreciate a more natural cocoa experience.
Although the powder creates a chocolatey, rich brown color after being melted into the hot water; the taste quality can disappoint the grand expectations of hot-cocoa lovers. The drink does give a regular hot cocoa flavor, but the taste is only there for a split-second and does not qualify to substitute for another brand. Trader Joe’s Organic Hot Cocoa offers a rich and authentic flavor of what natural cocoa is supposed to taste like. Unlike many overly sweet hot chocolate mixes, Trader Joe’s keeps it more on the bitter side, which appeals to those who enjoy a less processed option.
When it comes to packaging, Trader Joe’s hits the nail on the head. The gingerbread brown packaging paints the customer’s mind with a cool fall or winter night in a firelit room while friends and family gather, a warm cup of cocoa in their hands. Its slim, easy-open paper envelopes carry the powder mix is ideal for a pair of frostbitten hands just waiting to sip on something sweet.
The price lands at $3.99 for 10 powder-filled envelopes, making it a good deal compared to many other brands. That is around 40 cents for each packet, so for customers aiming for a low-price hot chocolate or are on a budget, Trader Joe’s has just the right item. Brands such as Swiss Miss sell their milk chocolate hot cocoa for around the same price, yet their packages only come with 8 packets. Additionally, organic food tends to be priced higher, so the fact that Trader Joe’s sells their product for a lower price while maintaining healthy ingredients seals the deal.
Trader Joe’s organic hot chocolate brings the cold winter break vibes into the room with its packaging and offers a respectable amount of hot cocoa for its fair price. The product offers many pros in terms of healthy ingredients and low prices, factors that could be superior to other brands.
But what matters most is the taste of the product, which leads to the fact that although the smell was there, flavor-wise it lacked meeting expectations. Despite the limitations, the mix is a good option for casual hot cocoa with family and friends. It offers easy step-by-step instructions as to how to make the cocoa, but the recommendation depends on individual taste preferences.
Overall, if customers are looking for a flavorful, rich, creamy hot chocolate, another brand could probably fill their needs rather than Trader Joe’s product.

Great! Now, all I can think about is having a cup of Hot Chocolate!
To follow up, I’d like to see the Chronic do a comparison piece on prepared Hot Chocolate: Dunkin’ vs. Starbs vs. Kindred…Etc.
