Some people enjoy the winter months, but when the ice becomes dangerous and the temperatures drop below -12 degrees, it might be time for eLearning.

Announced at 2:47 p.m. on Monday:

Tuesday, January 16, 2024 will be a snow day for West Chicago Community High School. Students should follow the e-Learning procedures.

Students must log onto their Chromebooks and complete all attendance forms for each of their classes by 1 p.m. on January 16. Any assignments for all classes will be posted on Google Classroom. Teachers will be available throughout the day by email.

After school activities will be continued. Students should check in with coaches to see if there are any practice cancellations or time changes. The Board of Education meeting at 7 p.m. will still be held tomorrow night.

“Please be advised that there will be limited availability for after-school activities and practices on January 16. Individual coaches and sponsors will handle further communication with their groups,” Communications and Community Relations Coordinator Brittney Walker said via email.

This in-person learning cancellation is less about the snow than it is about the record cold temperatures. The temperature low for tomorrow is -13 degrees Fahrenheit  and with the wind chill that could bring the real feel to over -20 degrees Fahrenheit.

This level of cold has not been recorded since 2019 when the Chicagoland area experienced a polar vortex.

“Forecasted low temperatures for Monday and Tuesday are currently at -10 degrees, the lowest reading since a temperature of -21 degrees was recorded on Jan. 31, 2019,” NBC Chicago staff member Kevin Jeanes reported
