Freshman Jace Serpa is no stranger to wrestling. Starting at age four, there was never a doubt that he would own the mat.
"Wrestling has been running through my mom’s side of the family for years and years. My dad wanted me to try it out and I've loved every second of it," Serpa said.
One of Serpa's coaches, boys' varsity assistant Enzo Silva, recalled his foundation and several strengths offered very early on in the season.
“Jace’s biggest strengths are his technical skill set, wrestling IQ, and work ethic. He came into the program with a strong foundation from the Martinez Wrestling Club, which shows in his positioning, mat awareness and ability to stay composed in tough situations,” Silva said
Despite Serpa's familiarity with the sport, high school season demands higher expectations and new competition to go up against.
"The most challenging part is dealing with the mental aspect of wrestling. This sport takes a big toll on you if you’re not mentally strong," Serpa said.
Silva went on to highlight several of Serpa's strengths and improvements throughout the season.
"He has improved his ability to apply his skills under pressure and has continued to sharpen his technique through constant work in the room, including in the offseason,” Silva said.
Beyond the mat, Serpa demonstrates incredible work ethic and discipline, setting an example for the rest of his team.
“He fits seamlessly into the team culture and leads by example through his attendance, effort, and mindset,” Silva said. “His approach in the room positively influences his teammates and will continue to for future wrestlers.”
Serpa went on to get first in the Upstate Eight conference at the 120Ib weight category, and is in hopes of winning the state competition in the coming years.
"My goal is to win state as a freshman or sophomore, and I plan on working hard everyday up until that chance happens," Serpa said.
These thoughts were echoed by Silva as he looks forward to the upcoming tournament.
"With consistency and discipline, he has all the tools to reach that level,” Silva said. "He represents what the program strives to build and is a future leader who will help guide our incoming WEGO wrestlers.”
