Out of 58 students, only four students moved to the Voice of Democracy district competition where one student placed.

Seniors Maxwell Smith, Isabella Guizzetti, Jenna Palka, and junior Jack Gillespie advanced to the Voice of Democracy district competition.

Smith placed fourth in the 19th district competition.

“The competition is just a blast, given the opportunity to put pen to paper and having your voice heard is always an honor,” Smith said.

The Voice of Democracy scholarship gives high school students the opportunity to speak out on freedom and democracy.

Students that entered were awarded over $3,000 in scholarship money by the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 6791 and Auxiliary.

The Voice of Democracy is an annual event that all students can take part in.

Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme.

“(The Voice of Democracy competition) is designed to express patriotism and allows students to voice their opinion,” government teacher Mary Ellen Daneels said.

This year’s theme was “My Responsibility to America.”

Students were given a certificate and prizes during the District 94 board meeting on Feb.21
