The gym echoed with whistles, continuous cheering, and coaches calling out instructions from the corners of the mats. On Jan. 16, 2026, the West Chicago girls’ wrestling team headed to Hoffman Estates High School for the first day of a two-day tournament, where they competed against teams from 48 different districts.
The Girls Hawk Invite featured over 400 athletes from more than 40 schools, reflecting the continued expansion of girls’ wrestling and giving athletes the opportunity to gain experience against unfamiliar opponents.
While the tournament included competitors at many levels, junior Mia Quiroz defeated her Oak Park opponent 9–4, securing a technical fall. After falling behind early in the match, Quiroz adjusted her approach and gained points as the bout continued.

Junior Itzel Flores competed in a close match against the Hoffman Estates Hawks but ultimately fell 15–9. Flores continued to score throughout the match and remained engaged until the final whistle, adding experience against a strong opponent.
Other team members also competed in close matches, highlighting the range of experience on West Chicago’s roster. Teammates supported one another throughout the day, responding to both wins and losses as the tournament progressed.
“I feel that my performance yesterday was actually one of my best performances this season. I sadly lost my first match, but in my second match I really stepped up and outdid myself,” sophomore Dioselin Rincon said.

The first day of the tournament provided West Chicago with additional competition opportunities.
“I improved by believing in myself and not doubting my abilities – never be a negative Nancy,” sophomore Weni Kouri said.
The Girls’ Hawk Invite also reflected the continued growth of girls’ wrestling across the district. With a combination of wins and losses on the second day, the team left with a clearer understanding of areas for improvement, and new goals for upcoming competitions, senior Roxanna Santiago said.
At the end of the tournament, the girls team ended up placing 9th out of 40 teams, with four girls placing on the podium, including senior Brissia Bucio, and juniors Mackensie Szajda, Olivia Halminiak, and Batula Nasib.
