Coffee shops have been around for centuries: The first ones surfaced in the late 1400s and mid-1500s in the Middle East. These coffee shops were positioned as important social and political hubs. By the 2000s, teenagers started using coffee shops as “hangout spots” which helped the market peak. What makes coffee shops unique is their comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, and the wide variety of flavors that allow everyone to find their perfect drink.
In a Wildcat Chronicle poll conducted in October 2025, 108 West Chicago Community High School students weighed in on their favorite coffee chains. Starbucks led with 51% of the votes, while 35% chose Dunkin’. These results reflect the strong loyalty many students have toward the major chains, even with so many local options available.
Everyone has craved ice cold coffee, and then showed up to a random coffee shop only to find that the offerings are too strong or too overpriced. Thankfully, the western suburbs of Illinois have plenty of spots that get it just right. Well, do not worry: these are the top 5 coffee shops in the area.
#5 Dunkin
Underrated coffee spot! Dunkin has affordable drinks and the price point makes it accessible for anyone who craves coffee or any other sweet drink. With countless locations across Illinois, it is one of the most convenient options. Some might say that Dunkin’s flavors are inconsistent, but that is what makes it taste like home: not every cup comes out the same way every time.
#4 Seven Brew
New to Illinois, but already extremely popular, Seven Brew is known for its cheap and customizable drink menu. Although not actually a coffee shop, Seven Brew is perfect for people on the go. It can get crowded really quickly, but the drinks are worth the wait, especially with unique offerings like toasted marshmallow or caramel drizzle.

#3 Starbucks
People say Starbucks is overrated, but their coffee is such a staple. Whether rushing to work or school, or looking for a reliable cold coffee, Starbucks is everywhere and easy to find. Not only is the coffee really good, but their Refreshers are something other coffee spots cannot compete with. The cozy interior of these coffee shops also provides a comfy environment for customers to do their work.
#2 Villa Cafe
As a home-based coffee shop located in Streamwood, Villa Cafe has to be a runner up. Their coffee is affordable, and they have amazing flavors to choose from, such as pumpkin, maple, and even lavender. Though underrated, Villa Cafe’s coffee never disappoints. For those who are not coffee fans, Villa Cafe also serves protein shakes that are ideal for anyone on the go.
#1 Vannie’s House
By far one of the best coffee shops in the western suburbs, Vannie’s House stands out for its flexibility and flavor. Patrons can easily customize their drinks depending on whether they are into darker or sweeter coffee – whatever one’s taste buds desire! The very flexible menu features a number of different kinds of drinks, not just coffee. Their shop is also not very crowded, which makes it a great place to study or catch up on work. It is a hidden gem that keeps people coming back for more and is incredibly deserving of the #1 spot.

Sorry, but the fact that Dunkin made the list and Kindred Coffee Roasters didn’t make it is a little disturbing. Does someone have something against Kindred?
