Soccer team scores big win during first homecoming game

First time’s a charm for the varsity boys soccer team after playing in their first homecoming game on Friday against Kennedy, winning 2-1.
Senior Emilio Velazquez scored in the first half off of a header kicked by senior Eduardo Suarez.
Suarez scored a goal in the second half from a penalty kick after he was fouled inside the box.
“We did well, our possession was really good. Overall I think we dominated the game,” junior Oscar Romero said.
Because they played before the homecoming football game, the team had a huge turnout of fans.
“We normally don’t get as many fans that come but we did this time. It was awesome having a lot of support in the stands and it motivated us to do better,” Romero said.
Many players are hoping that the tradition continues for years to come.
They have competed against some tough teams so far.
“We’ve had a couple of setbacks but we just need to go out hard and strong and finish games. For the most part we are doing really well,” head coach Jose Villa said.
The team recently played against Minooka, the national high school team champions from last year. They were leading two points but ended up tieing, and then lost in penalty kicks.
“It’s an unfortunate way of losing. It’s not fun but there has to be a winner. Not to say that we didn’t play well, which we did ,” Villa said.
Their next game is Tuesday against Glenbard East at 4:30 p.m.
