Following a 3-0 loss against Naperville North on Aug. 26, the West Chicago boys’ soccer team remains confident in their talent and abilities to have a great season. Although the desired results were not achieved, the team played with resilience, strength and heart, showing promise for the upcoming games.
“The team’s goals for this season are to compete in every match. We love bringing joy to the community, and like every season, we aspire to bring silverware to WEGO,” Assistant Varsity Coach Dorian Carrasco said.

With 11 seniors on the Varsity roster, the upperclassmen are preparing the way for – and motivating – the next generation of WEGO athletes. Players like seniors Abraham Salinas and Kuba Slupski displayed their vast talent, and showed personality on and off the ball. Younger players like sophomores Julian Lopez and Enrique Correa brought stability and security to the team’s style of play on Aug. 26, working through the middle of the field and creating key passes to their teammates.
“Areas we need to improve from last year are to start the game fast and strong off the start so we can get a quick lead. We also need to improve on building up from the back and work on our transitions after we lose the ball up top,” Salinas said.
Carrasco and head Varsity coach Jose Villa anticipate a winnable and successful season, but recognize that there are obstacles that the team will need to be overcome to maximize their potential.
“We have a very good team this year with the ability to compete for everything,” Carrasco said. “The mental aspect of the game is something that we will have to learn how to manage. There will be moments when we feel some sort of pressure; we have to understand that the season is long. We need to play the game with freedom and joy. The game that we know how to play, with our brand of soccer. ”

With several challenging opponents on the schedule this year, including York, Benet, and Lyons, the team will be tested to the limit, and are looking forward to unleashing new talent and displaying their hard work ethic.
“We have one of the toughest schedules in the state, which will put us in situations of growth and experience. This will enable us to compete at a high level throughout the entire season,” Carrasco said.
Salinas reflected on the game and will be one of the key players, leading the WEGO boys’ team as captain.
“As long as we all give 100% in games and practices, we can compete and give a good battle to any team we face this season,” Salinas said.
