New windows. New floors. And new bathrooms, too. It seems like most of West Chicago Community High School’s wings have been remodeled, yet the math hallway looks the same as it has since the 1990s. Some say the outdated look is due to lockers that have not been updated; others say it is the tile flooring.
Realistically, the math wing was last remodeled in 2016. The walls were repainted, and new whiteboards were added. However, not everyone notices the differences.
“It looks pretty old, and the lockers need a new upgrade,” senior Alex Montoya said.
Many students believe that more renovations should be done in the math wing, particularly to the floors.
“I say the floors are pretty messed up. They’re more cracked and dirty, maybe just scratched. I also feel like they should be changed,” senior Diego Contreras said.
Some have also pointed out that the hallway appears darker and less inviting than other areas of the school.
“Yes, there should be some renovations. Compared to all the other hallways and new add-ons that the school has, I feel like it’s falling behind a little bit. I wouldn’t say it’s ugly, but it’s definitely less appealing,” Contreras said.
Math teacher Joe McCollum does not have many complaints about his classroom, but he does wish for one thing.
“There’s [nothing] that I need to do my job better in my classroom, except the window,” McCollum said.
Unfortunately, there are few plans in the works to update the math area beyond a potential floor replacement.
“We probably wouldn’t have any other renovations. At some point in time, we need to do lockers in the entire building, and either have them painted or replaced, or something like that. But other than that, we probably wouldn’t have any plans to do anything else in the math area,” Oberg said.
