Sport competition available to students encourages healthy lifestyle

Last minute applications for the third annual triathlon are still available.
All PE and driver’s ed students are eligible to participate in the triathlon on April 26 during your class hour.
Students who participate will swim eight laps in the pool, ride the stationary bike for three miles on bike mode level five, and will run one mile on the track.
“When we first started, we did a field trip form where the kids were out in the morning and then we did one period where they were in the pool, one period on the bike, and then one period where they were running,” division head of the physical department Bill Lech said.
Last year, the triathlon was condensed into a mini triathlon taking place during each PE class hour.
The scoring is from start to finish. Whoever gets the shortest time is the overall winner.
Time in the pool, on the bike, on the track, and in between all count towards each participant’s overall time.
“When the student finishes that eighth touch in the pool, the clock doesn’t stop. They have to get out of the pool. They have to dry off. They have to get to the fitness center. They have to keep moving,” Lech said.
Each participant has a manager that helps with the towels, getting kids dried off, carrying shoes and so forth.
“I think it’s great because the kids that don’t participate, as students in the triathlon start to gear towards the track, take a spectator role. It’s always more fun when you’re crossing the finish line and you have people rooting for you,” Lech said.
The triathlon is meant to bring awareness to having more physical activity and better health.
“I’m proud of the things we’ve accomplished in physical education and I hope the kids understand the importance of being healthy,” Lech said.
