Filmwatchers bundled up on Oct. 15 for a brisk Movie Night on Memorial Field as WEGO’s “Once Upon a Time” Homecoming week got underway.
Last night marked Student Council’s annual Homecoming Movie Night for all WEGO students, who needed only show their IDs to gain entry to the movie. They were allowed – and encouraged – to bring blankets, pillows, and other necessities to stay warm as temperatures dipped to the mid-40s.
Most students reported they were happy about being at the event with their friends, though some complained about the cold weather as Disney’s “Tangled” played on the big screen.
“I’m not really paying attention, I’m just for the atmosphere and school spirit. I also think it’s really cold,” senior Eduardo Garcia said.
Many students expressed that “Tangled” was a good movie choice for the occasion.
“It’s pretty cool, I’ve seen it a lot, but it’s always a banger, you know, going back and watching it,” senior Marvin Maldonado said.
However, Maldonado found it difficult to concentrate on the film, given the frigid weather.
“Honestly, it’s really, really cold, so I wish they gave us some blankets, at least,” Maldonado said.
When students arrived at Memorial Field around 6:50 p.m., they sat down at any open space on the turf field, and prepared to watch the movie that was being projected on a screen.
Several clubs set there concession stands to sell goods to students, including a Kona Ice truck. Student Council offered pop for $1, and Homecoming t-shirts for $15. Compass brought in pizzas from Pizza Now, which sold for $3, and GSA sold glow bracelets, necklaces, and glasses, which ranged from $3-4.
These goods were welcome to students, who were looking to snack and hang out with their peers.
“Having these selections of items gives us options to buy and snack with something delicious,” sophomore Daniel Esteban said.
Overall, the event was well-attended, but several participants expressed a hope that Homecoming would move to an earlier date in the year moving forward.
“I feel like they waited too long this year to do Homecoming and it just really ruins it, you know?” senior Susana Correa said.
Although “Tangled” was a solid choice, some students suggested they would have liked a spooky movie instead since the event occurred in October, near Halloween. Others were disappointed their choice was not selected.
“I personally prefer ‘Shrek’ because I feel like it’s more entertaining and it’s just funnier than ‘Tangled,’” Correa said.
Either way, all students had a great night watching the movie with their peers.
“It’s a little chilly out here, but I see we got a good crowd. A lot of our students have come here prepared. They got their blankets. They’re enjoying themselves. So a little cold does not stop a WEGO student,” Social Studies teacher Jamie Garcia said.
