On September 10, 2024, former President Donald Trump of the Republican Party and Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party met for what turned out to be their only debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Trump has since refused to participate in any future debates, making this editorial especially timely. While both candidates made valid points during the debate, their behavior was shockingly unprofessional, especially for individuals aiming for the highest office in the country.
Throughout the debate, Trump and Harris repeatedly interrupted each other. This behavior is incredibly unprofessional, particularly from those seeking the presidency. The idea of using muted microphones during debates has been suggested before, and we fully support it. Harris herself has endorsed this idea. Muted microphones would ensure a respectful exchange of ideas, which is crucial in debates between potential world leaders.
Even more concerning than the interruptions were the personal insults that dominated the debate.
“She hates Israel. If she’s president, I believe Israel will not exist within two years,” Trump said.
“World leaders are laughing at Donald Trump,” Harris said.
What is missing in these debates and public appearances is meaningful discussion about the issues America needs to solve. Instead, we are left with insults and misinformation.
For example, Trump falsely claimed that immigrants were coming into the country and eating citizens’ pets. The person involved in the incident he referred to was an American citizen, not an immigrant. False claims like this damage trust in leadership. Our presidents must provide accurate information or risk becoming unreliable.
Harris, too, has made false statements. During the debate, she said, “We’re not going back to when Donald Trump tried to cut Social Security and Medicare.” However, Trump has consistently opposed cutting these programs, even saying during a rally in Minnesota, “I will not cut one penny from Social Security or Medicare.”
Both candidates’ reliance on misinformation and personal attacks leaves the public unsure of what to believe. Their lack of honesty makes it difficult to trust either of them.
Harris proposed additional debates on October 24 or 27, but Trump refused, declaring on his social media platform, Truth Social, “THERE WILL BE NO REMATCH,” and “SO THERE IS NOTHING TO DEBATE.”
As students, we may not have the right to vote yet, but we still care about the leadership of our country. Many of us rely on second-hand sources for debate information rather than watching the events unfold ourselves. This disconnect only highlights how powerless we can feel in the face of an election that directly impacts our future.
Regardless of who wins, both Trump and Harris need to show greater maturity. Anyone running for the presidency must hold themselves to a higher standard if they wish to gain the trust of the American people. Our next president will be the face of America. If they cannot maintain professionalism and respect in a debate, what does that say about us as a country?
