The Varsity girls’ volleyball teams from Leman and Benjamin Middle Schools opposed each other in a 20-minute timed game at West Chicago Community High School’s middle school night Monday afternoon.
The high school’s volleyball team began to set up the Bishop Gym around 3:15 to get the court ready and show their support for possible future additions to the program.
“Middle school night prepares middle schoolers for the expectations of high school volleyball and to get involved,” Junior Varsity player Lauren Krupp said.
Although in a new setting, the teams did not fail to put in their best efforts and take advantage of the experience offered to them.
“I cannot wait for middle school night [to start] because I get to verse all of the people I will play with in the future at WEGO,” eighth grader Isabella Gottberg said.
Following the Bengals’ claim of the first point, Brooklyn Alderton, an eighth grader at Benjamin Middle School, started off strong with a nine-point serving streak, only four of which were volleys.
“I’m really excited to play high school volleyball, it’s going to be really fun,” Alderton said.
Leman Middle School had two early subs to combat Benjamin’s upper hand, with 4 going in for 15 and 5 going in for 24. Despite these efforts, Benjamin won the first set 25-8.
As the timer expired, the Chargers had the lead in the second set with a score of 6-4. Being the first time inviting the different middle school communities of WEGO to go head-to-head, the game was an overall success for all players.
“If I had the opportunity to play at the high school when I was in middle school I think it would help me to be more confident on that court when I started my freshman year,” Junior Varsity player Grace Munter said.
