Former Leman LRC Clerk Mireya Garcia-Carrasco came to WEGO’s Learning Resource Center in early spring, and is opening a new chapter in her life as the new Library Assistant.
Garcia-Carrasco works at the high school in the daytime, and the West Chicago Public Library at night. She has worked at the public library for 12 years.
When a position opened up at the WCCHS in the spring, Garcia-Carrasco moved from Leman Middle School, as the position was a better fit for her degree and experience.
“I wanted to work at something that I went to school for. A position opened up, and I gave it a shot – and they hired me,” Garcia-Carrasco said.
Her responsibilities all include managing the copy paper, computers, and the extra room reservations.
In her spare time, Garcia-Carrasco enjoys listening to her books – in fact, she listens to around 100 a year.
“[I’m] not a big reader, but I listen to books, [and] enjoy books a lot,” Garcia-Carrasco said.
Carol Naughton, LRC Director, has appreciated the impact Garcia-Carrasco has made at WEGO already.
“One thing that’s really cool is [and] nice to have [is] a native Spanish speaker up here, because we’ve not had that before, and it has made our services way more accessible to more students,” Naughton said.
At the beginning of the school year as a LRC Clerk, Garcia-Carrasco goes into the classrooms and checks out all of the textbooks to students and teachers. She is also responsible for checking all of them back in at the end of the year and tracking them down if they went missing.
“Yeah, I’m in charge of all the textbooks,” Garcia-Carrasco said.
