Students seek to make school more inclusive to all genders

Gay-Straight Alliance is looking to make the school an even more welcoming place by proposing new options on school forms and the possibility of creating gender neutral bathrooms.
Currently, the student information system does not have options for preferred name or preferred pronoun.
“Right now, GSA is looking to change the student information system so that it is more inclusive of all the different types of students who attend our school so that it meets the needs of the school, but also meets the needs of the students and those students’ families,” GSA adviser Brad Larson said.
GSA members are putting together a presentation for Principal Moses Cheng to try and help better serve the students in the school.
Student members are looking to modify different types of school information. They want to give students the option to choose a preferred name and a preferred pronoun.
According to freshman GSA member Nikolaus Giambalvo, by changing this information on class rosters and student IDs, students can feel more comfortable at school.
A bigger goal that they have is to obtain gender neutral bathrooms.
“There’s no safe place for them (transgender students) , so they don’t feel as comfortable as everyone else,” Giambalvo said.
GSA members plan to present their ideas to Cheng before spring break. They hope that some of these adjustments will be able to help students and family feel less stressed in school.
“Some people don’t feel like they’re accepted for who they are, so it would be better because everyone would feel included. This is a school, everyone wants to feel accepted and safe here,” Giambalvo said.
