The WEGO boys’ volleyball team made an impressive comeback against Huntley High School in a home match and improved its record to 1-2 on March 31. The Wildcats brought energy and resilience to the court, fighting for every ball.

Several small but costly defensive mistakes in the first set led to an early lead for Huntley. Soon after, a timeout was called for the Wildcats as the Red Raiders were up 8-3. Despite their best efforts, miscommunication and ineffective blocks continued, and the Wildcats were unable to take the lead. This ultimately resulted in a 25-20 loss in the first set.

Early in the second set the score was still even, with a timeout being called by the Wildcats at 5-5. The change in mentality and discipline after the break was evident to the opponents and the stands. The Wildcats began capitalizing on their opportunities, with major offensive spikes coming from senior captain Sean Blickhan and defensive blocks from seniors Aidan Ryan and Ryan Slattery.

“[Aidan Ryan]was able to step in and fill a big role in the game when we needed someone and he cooked,” Lutfiyev said. “I’m excited to see what else he has in his bag this season.”

In the back line, junior Alfredo Rojas and senior libero Omar Lutfiyev set their teammates up with strong passes and received almost every serve with confidence. This change in momentum led to the Wildcats winning the second set.

“As we’ve been with and against each other at practice, we’ve all grown closer – and more competitive – towards each other,” Rojas said.

The effort did not stop there. Coming into the third set, the Wildcats refused to back down or let the first set dictate the rest of the game. They showed dominance in every aspect of the game, whether it was digging, setting or spiking. Teamwork and encouragement after every play boosted the Wildcats’ confidence and made the game much more enjoyable to watch. In the end, the Wildcats came out on top with a 25-15 win in the third set.
