Colorful leaves. Warm coffee. Cool air. Hayrides. Pumpkins. Halloween. Fall is here. Here are the top song suggestions to get into the Autumn spirit.
Fall, also commonly referred to as Autumn, is often romanticized, with social media impacting the season’s depiction greatly. “Aesthetic” TikToks are made, with a fall song chosen for the music. According to followers on the Wildcat Chronicle’s Instagram story, 52% of responders said they do not have a fall playlist, while 48% do.
“They (People) notice the changing colors, feel the soft texture of warm clothing, breathe in the sense of spice and cinnamon. All of these sights and sounds of the fall trigger the reward center of the brain and release dopamine, which makes us feel cozy, calm, and nostalgic during the fall,” Psychologist Dr. Susan Albers of Click On Detroit, said.
#5 Eyes On Fire-Blue Foundation
By name, some may not recognize this song. Within the first seconds of listening, the listener is instantly transported into the film “Twilight”, in Bella’s bedroom, as she finds out Edward Cullen’s identity. The woman singing at the start makes it the most recognizable song from the fantasy film’s soundtrack. It is a popular movie to rewatch during spooky season, thanks to its ominous vampires and eerie weather in Forks, Washington.
Stream Twilight on Hulu and Netflix.
#4 Insomniac-Memo Boy & Chaka Efendi
Popular on TikTok, Insomniac is placed over fall-related videos that capture the essence of the autumn season. The playful melodies capture the whimsical feeling of fall. Many may recognize this song from TikToks with voiceovers and audio clips from Halloween movies, such as Hocus Pocus or Halloweentown.
#3 Fade Into You- Mazzy Star
Also released in the 20th century in 1993, Fade Into You strikes a double-edged sword of melancholy and yearning into the listener. The slow-paced tempo, combined with the slide guitar, creates a range of intimate feelings of heartbreak or a sense of comfort. These opposing emotions capture the change from summer to autumn to winter, with the comfort that change creates growth.
#2 Virginia Beach- Drake
“For All The Dogs” is arguably one of the most nostalgia-inducing Drake albums. Released in October of 2023, many associate this song with fall, reminding them of past memories. The sample of Frank Ocean’s “Wiseman” in the intro creates the moonstruck feeling of longing for the past while displaying frustration at the present, as the lyrics suggest. Drake raps, “Asked me if I could have treated you better, but nope”, showing how he did his best, and it was not enough for someone else.
#1 There She Goes- The La’s
“Gilmore Girls: S1 E1“. Spanning the small town of Stars Hollow, “There She Goes” plays while Lorelai Gilmore makes her way to Luke’s, the local coffee shop she practically lives in. The series, first released in October of 2000, is a classic fall show commonly binge-watched as the calendar says “September 1”. Listening to this song transports listeners into that scene, with the help of the lively melody and 90s-style opening riff.
Stream “Gilmore Girls” on Hulu and Netflix.
