West Chicago’s first play, the Wildcats fumbled, and South Elgin recovered. The Storm once again scored quickly, making it 14-0 just minutes into the game.
“The second we got on that field the energy just was low and we just had a ton of simple mistakes. In the first half it just wasn’t there. In the second half, the energy went up, we started to play better, and we began to adapt to the other team’s play style,” junior Daniel Papp said.
West Chicago Wildcats regroup during a timeout late in the game on Sept. 26 against the Storm.
Even when down 14-0, the Wildcats had a few tricks up their sleeve. On their next possession, they ran a trick play that worked and led to a touchdown. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 14-6. South Elgin got right back to work and scored on the next drive.
“To prepare for this week’s game we are all watching film and locking in for Friday’s matchup against Elmwood Park. Our offense will focus on running the ball better, and our defense will work on stopping the run,” senior Joey Mercadante said.
After all was said and done, the Storm walked away with six touchdowns while the Wildcats had two. This game moves the Storm to 2-0 in conference play, putting them first, while the Wildcats fell to 1-1, dropping them to fourth.
“The game went well from the sidelines, and was so fun to watch. Of course, the score line was not how the team had hoped, but overall, it was super enjoyable to see some of the students come together – and watch the relationships between students and players as they talked afterwards,” junior Kaylee Kreitzer said.
