Back in the 90s, popular teen fashion trends included leopard print, Doc Martin shoes, overalls, the grunge aesthetic, and middle parts. Today’s popular teen fashion trends are about the same, but with a modern element to them showing off people’s craze to dress to impress.
Fashion, no matter how or what one wears, shows off a person’s personality and characteristics. Not everybody would rock a jacket the same way, and not everybody would wear athletic shorts for every season. Students at WEGO love to show off their fashion sense and new apparel. From their new Nike dunks or to their new Pandora charm bracelet, everyone has their own way of showing off their style. And style is what builds the student body.
Leather jackets, flannels, and graphic zip up sweaters are popular choices to beat the cold, but also make statement pieces for students to build their outfits off when choosing what to wear.
Accessorizing is key to any outfit, most like to keep it minimalistic and rock either gold or silver jewelry either a statement necklace or wrists covered in bracelets for more of a maxalistic flare.
“I’ll usually only wear something like just earrings and necklace, because that’s just what looks best and it doesn’t look so plain,” sophomore Michelle Guevara said.
Style is explored further than just what a person wears, a lot of students at WEGO, including junior Ella Moffat, also enjoy decorating their backpacks, lunch bags, and water bottles with fun and cute trinkets and or keychains showing off clubs or their niche interests.
Shoe game is crucial in today’s world. Shoes are the pavement when it comes to an outfit. Having a good pair of shoes that look nice and match the outfit just helps elevate the look. To the male half of the student body, shoe game is more prevalent and must be kept up to mint condition, no scuff marks nor creases on any pair of shoes.
Students also enjoy switching up how they wear their hair, half up half down, braids, or a slick back pony with edges laid down. A lot of teens, like junior Alo Cardiel, also wear a lot of hair clips, headbands, scrunchies, and – as seen – hats, even if they do go against the dress code.
Skinny is out and baggy wide legged pants seem to be in. Most of the student body has ditched tight jeans for bootcut or relaxed fitted pants, embracing brands like JNCO and EMRYE with their skateresc aesthetic.
Secondhand shopping and thrifting has grown in popularity throughout the years, students in their free time go out to Goodwill, Value Village, or The Salvation Army to find cheap vintage clothing and accessories like handbags. A couple students have started their own secondhand business on apps like Depop showing off their finds for people to buy.
“What makes me wanna go out to thrift is the thrill of finding something good. Cause when you find something good it feels like the trip was so worthwhile but when you don’t its like you are gonna wanna come back to experience that “good find” feeling again,” senior Edgar Oropeza said.
Like in the 90s, sports jerseys have come back into the loops of fashion trends. Students proudly show off their favorite sports teams or solely enjoy the look of it, no relation to sports whatsoever. Some enjoy layering a long sleeve shirt or hoodie underneath to give it more pizzazz.
Students involved in sports show off their athletic team or WEGO pride. Wearing apparel such as their school’s football playoff hoodies or Track and Field sweatpants. Student athletes rock their sports as much as they can in comfy-cozy clothes.
“It’s cool to see your teammates and other people at school reflecting your program by spreading the word through sports merch,” senior Mia Zapata said.
Female students love to get their nails done, not just for special occasions. Some get theirs done every so often, showing off a new set to their friends. From coffin shaped or almond with French tips, nail art is another way students show off their personal style.
“I like getting my nails done because I feel like my hands, with no nails, they look like little boy hands – make me feel very classy, very like put together in a way,” senior Joana Cortez said.
Not only do students use hair accessories to decorate their heads, but also headphones to add a little something else to their fit. From Bluetooth headphones like AirPod Max’s or Bose to wired earphones plugged straight into their phones. Headphones add an extra bit of mysterious aura to a person.
Personal style is important to the students at WEGO. Personal expression helps a person explore and show off their likes and dislikes in fashion. Styles ranging from more grunge aesthetics to a more minimalistic beige look flood the halls of WEGO. Everyone can dress similarly with their baggy pants or Lululemon shapewear jacket, but not everyone can use similar pieces to create a whole new look, very differently how other people would use them. Style is a very important piece that makes the student body the student body.
“Personal style is important because it’s fun, and it separates you from others while also connecting you with similarities. If bipolar was a style, that would be me because I could go from grudge to streetwear,” junior Ashley Garcia said.
