Family and consumer science students prepare for state
February 22, 2016
Competitors in the Future Community and Career Leaders of America are preparing for state after participating at regionals at College of DuPage on Feb. 5.
“The FCCLA is for family and consumer science classes involving child development, interior design, fashion, and foods classes,” adviser Brittney Bauer said.
By next week, FCCLA will know who is competing in state because students need permission to compete, Bauer said.
All competitors participated in child development where students had to read a story in front of the audience of judges. The students had to pretend that the judges were preschoolers.
“It’s a little awkward because the preschoolers are not there so you have to show that the preschoolers are responding,” Bauer said.
First place winners included seniors Laura Mendoza and Lupe Valenzuela for storytelling.
“They did a great job because they incorporated group time with their story towards the end. Their judges really loved that they incorporated a song to get the kids into groove,” Bauer said.
Second place winners in story telling were seniors Reyna Magana, Christy Perez, Jenn Alanis, and DiMone Cathey-Lattimore, and juniors Naara Rodriguez and Lizeth Romero.
“There was nothing that difficult with the competition, but all that matters is that you presented well, so it was not that bad,” Alanis said.
The FCCLA prepares the students to compete at state. April 7-9 in Springfield.
“The judges from the FCCLA give them feedback in which competitors can prepare for state,” Bauer said.
