Beabadoobee performed to a packed crowd at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom, Sept. 17.
Beabadoobe started her North American tour on September 8 and will conclude on December 3. She and her two openers, singer Keni Titus and Texan band Hovvdy, landed in Chicago Tuesday, Sept. 17. The Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom opened doors at 6 p.m. and Titus opened the show at 6:30, later followed by the band Howdy. Beabadoobe herself sang a total of 22 songs, varying from her albums and extended plays, accompanied by her band.
She started her set with the song “California” from her latest album,”This Is How Tomorrow Moves” which is also the name of the tour. She made sure when she was creating her setlist for her tour to have songs she knew fans would enjoy, like popular choices “Cologne” and “Sunny Day”.
Throughout the concert, Beabadoobee continuously switched between her guitar and bass, depending on the next song she sang.
A number of fans crowded the ballroom – not just the floor, but also the balconies. People flooded the merchandise line and then returned to the floor to watch the show.
The stage was lit up by lighting effects above Beabadoobee, there was a projector that displayed different backgrounds and illuminated them onto the white sheet behind her and the band. A fog machine also gave the stage an ominous effect.
The area where the crowd stood was very dark, only lit up by the screens of cellphones, as many pictures and videos were taken as the show progressed. People jumped and danced as the artist sang, but some commented that there was too much shoving and going in-and-out, a fact which seemed to annoy a handful of concert goers.
There has been a trend on TikTok, that at each show many people are complaining that some of her fans are lacking in concert etiquette.
Some individuals claimed that there was “too much” going on, including people yelling and/or shoving one another.
“They’re being annoying–I know some people were, like, pushing people–that was happening behind me,” senior Sharleen Hernandez said.
The behavior sparked a debate among some concertgoers as to whether there should have been a limited number of tickets sold; tickets averaged $75, and there was no set amount as to how many were to be sold.
Wildcat Chronicle alumni Joey Hernandez said that the tickets should have been limited “most certainly [to] at least four [per person].”
However, not everyone felt fan behavior was the biggest issue.
“The fans are respectful, at least from what I’ve seen. Everyone was vibing! But, after the show there was water, bottles, and cans all over the floor,” senior Isabela Callapina said.
Midway through Beabadoobe’s song “Beaches”, the white sheet that once projected the lights dropped to reveal a background of trees and lights. The crowd cheered loudly.
Now, singing with a whole new look to the stage, Beabadoobe wrapped up her set with a few more songs. She made conversation with the audience between transitions, and the crowd frequently responded back. She commented on how, though far from home, she enjoyed the short time she had with her fans – and all the cats – in Chicago.
Beabadoobee made light-hearted jokes about her music, but made sure to mention how her fans are so kind, and that she loves each one of them.
As she finished her set with “Cologne”, the other bassist in the band joined Beabadoobe for a duet to her song “She Plays Bass”. She then left the stage and the room went quiet – until someone started a chant. Soon, the whole ballroom was chanting for Beabadoobe to play “Fein”.
Beabadoobe came back out on stage, feigning to be puzzled after hearing the people calling out “Fein”. Perhaps sarcastically, she called to the audience, “So I was gonna play like the entire album of ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ but you kept singing. You kept singing ‘Fein.’” She jokingly said that she was going to just sing the piece by Travis Scott instead.
Beabadoobe never did sing “Fein”, but she finished her performance with “Coming Home”, ”The Way Things Go”, and “See You Soon”. Once she sang her last song, Beabadoobe said her goodbyes and left the stage as the show had now concluded.
As the show ended and the staff escorted out the fans, many expressed their happiness that Beabadoobe sang their favorite songs, such as “Coming Home” and “Charlie Brown”. People commented on how reasonable and even cheap the tickets for a Beabadoobee show were.
”Underrated. When I told people [going to the Beabadoobe concert] they were like ‘Who?’” senior Itzely Sanchez said.
The night concluded around 9:30 p.m. and fans left the Aragon Ballroom soon after.
Beabadoobe is set to continue her tour a day after leaving Chicago. “This Is How Tomorrow Moves” was her fifth album, and is one of the many tours she has initiated.
“The concert was amazing, despite me not being able to move my neck half the time. I really recommend Beaba Doobee to anyone who’s into that 90s indie type of music,” senior Miranda Bucio said.
