Latin music brings students together

Sounds of Latin music echo through the hall whenever Equipo Danzon club meets.
Professional dancer Luis Santiago from the Luis Arturo Dance Academy in Glen Ellyn is instructing club members how to dance to Latin music.
“Equipo Danzon is an after school club where kids have the opportunity to learn Latin dances and we throw in a little bit of hip hop too. I have been thinking of our students who come to school and would like to stay at the school longer, and would want to find a club that fulfills their time after school,” adviser Jeffrey Anderson said.
Santiago is also an adviser.
Students in the club learn to dance salsa, bachata, cumbia, hip-hop and other forms of Latin dances.
“(The first practice) went good. When the instructors taught us the first steps a lot of people got it in an instant and we were able to do the basic steps, the side steps and the turns,” freshman Jarette Valencia said.
Not only does Equipo Danzon help students in the physical way, but in a mental way as well by socializing with other dancers, according to Anderson.
Equipo Danzon is planning to perform.
“We would love to perform in front of students whether it would be an assembly or someone else,” Anderson said.
