Based on the emotional novel by David Nicholls, the mini-series “One Day” was released on Netflix Feb. 8 and is currently in the top 5 most popular releases.

“One Day,” is an emotional romance series based on a popular book published in 2009. It follows the friendship of Dexter (played by Leo Woodall), a popular party-goer, and Emma (played by Ambika Mod), a reserved author. The show starts with the two meeting at an end-of-year college party in 1988. They spend the night together talking and sleeping and become fast friends by the end of the night. Each episode exhibits yearly jumps into the future, leaving the events that happened within the year up to interpretation for the viewers.

Over the years, Dex and Emma become very close and see each other as the other’s best friend, though unfortunately don’t often get to see each other often. After Dex’s mother passes away, he falls into a habit of drinking heavily, resulting in the end of his friendship with Emma. They reunite a couple of years after their falling out at a mutual friend’s wedding, in which he tells Emma that he is engaged and going to become a father. They kiss and then decide to just stay friends. Emma stays by his side through it all, including his divorce from the adulterer he married.

It’s then revealed that Emma and Dexter spent a romantic night together during his divorce, and Emma decides she wants to pursue a relationship with him. Over three years, Emma and Dexter get married and struggle to have a baby.

On the way to see a house for purchase, Emma is struck by a reckless driver and passes away. The last episode is a fast-forward two years in the future, where Dexter is still struggling to move on and reminisces over his and Emma’s meet-cute.

This show is worth the watch, whether or not one has read the book. It’s funny, entertaining, and also gut-wrenching when it needs to be. It would have been better if the characters’ friendship was explored a little deeper, as they spent a lot of time apart; however, that fact didn’t take much off of the rating.

The main contributor to the 4-star rating is the likability of the two main characters. Emma is witty, smart, and accomplished. Dexter is humorous, complex, and relatable. They work well together, and the actor’s chemistry is undeniable. Their storylines were easy to follow and also entertaining. Knowing the characters as individuals rather than as a couple was a good choice on the writer’s end because it added to every emotional scene.

It can’t be stressed enough that soundtracks play an important role in television. Without good music, many scenes would feel incomplete. Luckily, the soundtrack for “One Day,” is exquisite. There was a mix of modern music and older music, and overall the blend was incredible and easily notable.

The actors did a great drop portraying the emotions of their characters. Ambika Mod has been in very few projects, and her acting is incredibly underrated. Her interpretation of Emma’s character was perfect, and nobody else would have been able to do the job as well as she did. As for Dexter, Leo Woodall is incredibly talented. His portrayal of addiction, love, grief, etc. was stunning, and as previously mentioned, the actor’s chemistry was electric and left viewers wishing to see more of these memorable characters.

Overall, “One Day,” was crafted with excellence, and is 100 percent worth the binge.
