West Chicago Community High School Varsity Girl’s Basketball team continued their dominant season with a win against East Aurora on Friday, Feb. 2 in the Bishop Gym. The game also marked the team’s Senior Night.

With nine seniors, the night proved to be an emotional one, with a few tears shed.

“It’s been a roller coaster. The experience has given me so many amazing friendships and so many memories,” said senior Miranda Enochs.

The starters for the Wildcats were Miranda Enochs, junior Jasmyn Triguerios, and seniors Ellie Wingstedt, Sydney Bennema, and Kailey Sabala. The game started with a long three-point shot from Trigueros to get on the board. The Wildcats moved the ball often, creating open shots for the taking on offense.

By halftime, the score was 35-15. While the evening was meant to honor the seniors, Trigueros stole the show, outscoring the East Aurora Tomcats with 18 points after two quarters; she would finish the game with 31 points.

Throughout play, West Chicago caused chaos on the defensive end, forcing many turnovers on East Aurora’s part.

The game, which finished with a score of 59-45 was largely dominated by the Wildcats, and their energy on both sides of the ball, and this allowed the team to put in their two managers, seniors Valerie Harris and Heidi Pereckas, who have never played basketball. The fans in Bishop Gym erupted in cheers and applause, encouraging the two managers to score their first career points.

“I was a little nervous looking at the crowd and I was processing the fact that I would have to play in front of all of these people but honestly when I got in the game with all of my friends all of the nerves went away and I had an absolute blast,” Harris said.

The bond between the team members, and their managers, was evident in last night’s win.

“This team has helped me grow as a person and as a player, and I couldn’t thank my teammates enough,” Wingstedt said.
