West Chicago girls’ soccer team faced off with Streamwood on Friday, April 26 on the home field, finishing with a score of 7-0.
As the girls kicked off the game in the first minutes, they started going hard and playing fast. The team took possession of the ball and kept it when the first goal came. In minute 34, midfielder Molly Merkel (‘26) scored the goal for the Wildcats with an assist from forward Heidi Perekas (‘24), which led them to a one-goal advantage within the first couple minutes of the game.
Throughout the first quarter of the first half, the Wildcats remained at 1-0.
“In today’s game, we felt that we were gonna have a strong offense. We have been putting in the work in practice,” defender Jenny Espinal (‘24) said.
As the play continued, the Wildcats maintained a good performance in the first half of the game. They largely kept possession of the ball, and had a few shots on goal with good communication between each other.
As the first half ended, the team was guaranteed a free kick leading midfielder Kaylee Krietzer (‘27) to success: she scored the second goal for the team.
With just a couple minutes left in the first half, Perekas scored the third goal for the Wildcats, allowing them to finish the first half with a score of 3-0.
“We were able to possess most of the time and make combinations which shows what the girls’ program is about. Our philosophy when it comes to futbol is to possess and play ‘tiki taka.’ The energy was up there, we were playing for each other, and I think that’s what made the game so much fun. And, well, it’s evident in the result,” midfielder Natalie Fernandez said.
Moving into the second half of the game, the Wildcats were given another free kick. This time, captain Leslie Garnica (‘24) stepped up to take the kick, scoring a beautiful goal from the 20-yard line, and putting the Wildcats in a four-goal lead.
In minute 26, the Wildcats received a corner kick; fellow captain Espinal got a great header on the ball and put West Chicago at 5-0.
As there were just 10 minutes left in the game, forward Sami Moesch ran towards the ball, rebounding it and putting in the sixth goal for the Wildcats.
As if Streamwood’s decimation was not yet complete, with just two minutes left of the game, Kreitzer secured the seventh and final goal for the team.
“I was happy with the results of today’s game. We came out and brought the energy and we crushed them. I was happy with my goal. I also had three other opportunities I could’ve scored, but other than that, I think my goal was good. We can never expect to win or anything but we definitely brought a lot of energy to win the game, our energy level was high from the start, and it was just better from the other team,” Merkel said.
