A loss to undefeated West Aurora High School ended badminton’s undefeated duals record on Thursday.

The matchup of the only two undefeated teams in the Upstate Eight Valley Conference was a head to head battle for first place.

“The winner has an inside track to the conference championship,” head coach Bill Lech said on Wednesday before the match.

After the five doubles matches and two singles, the girls were down 7-1.

Senior captain Gaby Quinones remained optimistic during the game,“Hopefully we can bounce back.”

The comeback Quinones hoped for didn’t happen. West Aurora maintained their undefeated record with an 11-4 win.

“I’m heartbroken,” said senior captain Leslie Bueno. “I thought we were going to win.”

The girls returned to the gym with a three-hour practice on Friday.

“To prepare for the rest of the season we work on what we didn’t do well today,” Bueno said.

Badminton has three games left before the conference tournament. Following the conference tournament, the team will head to sectionals.

“Hopefully [we will] have a couple of [state] qualifiers,” Lech said.
