As a way to help students who cannot afford an outfit for prom, social worker Janet Hurtado created WeGo Boutique.

“I was looking for some place for some students I knew who needed some help looking for dresses. Sometimes organizations have prom boutiques out in the community, but there was really nothing super close to here. I was really struggling in finding organizations that were doing it,” Hurtado said. “So, I started asking around if we had ever done anything like this in the school and we haven’t so I just figured it might be a good idea to try it.”

The boutique is located in the counseling office.

Students can register in the office to rent dresses, shoes, and jewelry while supplies last.

“The only reason for the renting would be to pay off dry cleaning so that the dresses get cleaned every year,” Hurtado said.

The WeGo Boutique depends highly on staff and student donations.

“I hope enough people will donate. I’ve gotten a good show already, just in this first week that I sent out an email,” Hurtado said. “Our goal is to get more dresses. I don’t want it to be like ‘here just take whatever dress,’ I want them to be able to shop and find a dress they actually like.”

Any students or staff with extra or outgrown dresses, shoes, or jewelry can drop them off at the counseling office as donations.

Hurtado plans on continuing WeGo Boutique for future proms.
