After competing at sectionals on Feb. 25, eight students from math team placed at regionals and are preparing for state on May 6 at the University of Illinois.

Freshmen Austin Schwatal and Nathan Shwatall received first place as a sophomore two person team.

Sophomores Jose Hinojosa, Alyssa Guttman, Sarah Solver and freshman Kurt Leano, Anna Navadomskis, and Oscar Almonte won first place in their eight-person team.

“We haven’t been to state in a while, I would have to say roughly 10 years so I am proud that we are going to state,” math team adviser Charles Vokes said.

Also, Nathan Schwatel won third place in algebra I.

“The team has worked hard and I am proud of them. They are a good group of people and we are working hard to prepare for state,” Vokes said.

In order to do well, the team is practicing.

“We are starting to practice for the state and we are doing practice questions so we can do the best we can,” Vokes said.

Besides competing in state, Vokes believes that having state at a college campus is helpful to the students.

“The students will be competing at a Big 10 school so that will be exciting for them. They will get to experience a college campus,” Vokes said.
