The award-winning school newspaper, the Wildcat Chronicle started off the year with success after receiving more awards for its online website.

Quill and Scroll awarded the paper the International Honor Award with two marks of distinction for school life and for photographs and videos.

The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) also gave the Chronicle two marks of distinction and a second class rating. The marks of distinction include design and navigation as well as a mark of distinction for interactivity and community.

Additionally, the Chronicle received a second class distinction from KEMPA Online which stands for the Kettle Moraine Press Association.

“I think it is great since we have a small staff and we are learning how to put together an online newspaper. To receive any type of honor is wonderful but to receive an international award and two marks of distinction is fantastic,” adviser Laura Kuehn said.

Winning these awards is an honor for the Chronicle.

“It feels nice to have that feedback. It is nice for someone to recognize our hard work and it’s also surprising. I never thought that we would get an award like that because we are such a small little staff. I  thought that a bigger staff would win more awards,” perspectives editor Mayeli Vivaldo said.

Some editors want to major in communications and the reward boosted their confidence.

“I learned that if you put in the work it pays off. Considering I want to go into the journalism industry, it makes me feel good about myself because I know I have the potential. Plus this looks fantastic on a college resume,” editor in chief Emily Wissemes said.

These awards are the last awards the staff will get for the first semester.

“We don’t start submitting again until spring, but I will expect us to keep receiving awards,” Kuehn said.
