As a way to raise money to cure cancer, the President’s Council and the American Cancer Society will host Relay for Life on May 21.

This is the second year for the event after it was stopped for a few years.

“It was brought back because of what it stands for. It’s a great way to raise money for such a good cause. We brought it back in hopes that now people will start realizing how great of a thing it is,” senior Grace Kelley said. “I think it went away before because people stopped going since it wasn’t well planned. Now we have a planning committee so it makes it a lot easier.”

Individual clubs and teams create their own ways of raising money for the event.

“Interact Club will be doing a bake sale and a bouncy house again this year. It’s going to be a dollar for  cookies and a dollar to jump. I know some other clubs will be doing face painting and track is doing the cookie run that they did last year. There’s going to be entertainment and more games from other clubs too,” senior Lily Michaels said.

A major and important part of Relay for Life is walking on the track.

“You walk to end cancer. The walking signifies the fight. You don’t have to walk the whole time. The goal is to have one person from each team,” Kelley said.

The event is an opportunity to show support for cancer victims and their families.

“I have had several family members who have had cancer in the past. It’s a good event. I believe in what it stands for,” activities director Marc Wolfe said.

The luminaria will happen this year again. It is an event where participants light candles in a luminaria bag to honor loved ones and cancer victims.

Hosts encourage students and the community to participate in Relay for Life.

“It stands for something so amazing. It’s not just a fundraiser that people don’t really know where the money goes to. The money does go to cancer research. Cancer affects every single person. You either know somebody who has cancer or you’ve been personally affected by it. It’s a spot where everyone can fight for the same cause,” Kelley said.
