After a bitter defeat against West Aurora, the boys volleyball team pulled off a victory against Wheaton Academy on Thursday, which helped to regain the team’s confidence.

The team lost 13-25 and 19-25 on April 5 in a match against West Aurora.

Thursday’s match with Wheaton Academy resulted in victory when the team won 26-28, lost 26-28, and won 25-22.

“The main thing about the match was that it was very close and we came out on top. We needed that confidence so that we can win tight matches. I think that was something big that came out of this match coming off a pretty tough loss against West Aurora on Tuesday,” varsity coach Kris Hasty said.

The match demonstrated the team’s effort they put into the match.

“We played as a team and we really brought it together even when they made little runs on us. Everybody contributed really well. We had hits from Alonso (Cardiel), Tommy (Enger), who is a sophomore who stepped up and Anthony (Arias). Overall, we did a good job,” junior captain Ross Behr said.

Also, the match against Wheaton Academy helped to show the team what needs improvement.

“I think the biggest thing we need to improve on is communication so that we are not calling every ball. We need to talk on every single ball and we are still not getting used to playing with each other right now, so we need to really call everything and talk all the time,” Hasty said.

Behr agrees with Hasty about how the team needs to practice how to communicate.

“We should have been talking a little bit more as a team to assist the ball getting over the net,” Behr said.

The team’s winning streak continued with an additional 4 out of 5 wins in a tournament on Saturday at St. Charles East High School.
