Wildcat wrestler Malik Milazzo went 3-0 along with the rest of the team going 3-1 at the Freshman-Sophomore tournament on Dec. 5 at Geneva High School.

This tournament was made up of younger wrestlers from 17 schools.

Sophomore Milazzo won first place overall. Sophomore Cosme Ramos and freshman Sebastian Terrazas won fifth overall. Sophomore Julio Rayo-Ramos won seventh place overall.

“Cosme, Malik, and Sebastian pinned each of their final opponents, which is six additional team points. Julio won his last match with a major decision, which is four team points,” freshman and JV coach Richard Kost said.

Other wrestling tournaments included varsity wrestling taking first place at the Carmel Dual on Nov. 28 and 29.

Senior Luis Perez went 4-0 with two pins and a major decision. Beating a wrestler by 8-14 points makes a major decision.

“I got into wrestling because I used to play football and I wanted to play another aggressive sport,” Perez said.

Senior Juan Aceves went 5-2 with 2 pins and a technical fall.

Technical fall means your opponent is ahead by 15 points which ends the match.

A pin is when both shoulders or both shoulder blades of your opponent is in contact with the mat for 2 seconds. When you pin your opponent, the match is over and you are the winner.

Senior Alexis Loa went 5-2 with four decisions. A decision is different from a major decision. An opponent wins a match by less than eight points.

Senior Josh Conlon went 7-0 with 4 pins. Senior Mason Otzwirk went 5-2 with three pins.

“I had to wrestle two weight classes up so it was a challenge. They had 20 pounds on me so I did my best to compete,” Otzwirk said.

Wildcats took home the first place plaque.

“It was a really good start to the season. Had a lot of good seniors wrestling,” varsity Coach Bill Dragonetti said.

The Wildcats next match will be home against South Elgin on Dec. 17.
